Show Us Your Desktop: Round 1
We’ve all probably browsed through lists of great desktop walpapers, but I thought it would be fun to actually see some of your desktops for real. I’ve done workspace round-ups before, and now we get to peer even closer into some of our collegues’ digital environments. Every artist is different, and as you can tell below….so are their desktops. I asked people on twitter to send me screenshots of their computer desktops and below is the majority of what hit the inbox. I’ll start with mine, below (main monitor only).

Some really great wallpapers here. I really think your wallpaper can help motivate you during the day.
My desk top is too cluttered right now but this is the background image.

I’m happy to see so many people using OS X :)
Here my Win/Work desktop from a couple months ago. I’m reworking it as we type.

Question: THIRD image down from top (primarily gray) — WHAT IS that stuff at the upper edge in place of the normal OSX menu bar? ANYONE KNOW? Thanks.
A clean desktop is an un-used desktop
@ Chris Long
It looks like a customized Windows theme/skin to me!
Georgios:
It can’t be Windows. I see an AUTOMATOR icon in there. That’s Mac only. Anyone else care to guess?
@Chris
It doesn’t MAC, if you look carefully to dock, you will see interesting details in there, especially application divider isn’t real, seems to me Rocket Dock.
@Chris,
I got some information from picture ( if someone didn’t do it anything on picture ) as follows. If you want to see yourself, just edit picture like normal text editor, you will some hex coded info in there:
“Adobe Photoshop CS3 Macintosh 2009:01:23 12:51:38″
this noob wants to post his. where can i send it?
heres mine http://www.uploadftw.com/200812/desk0923.jpg
Anyone know the name of the theme used in the 4th pic? its a very nice vista theme.
@O?uz Çelikdemir
The reason the image creation meta-data says Mac Photoshop is because Jay sized the image down using Photoshop on his Mac. The original screenshot is of Windosws – there’s no question of that.

This is pretty awesome if you ask me. Either way, Mac or PC.
@Bittbox can you ask the person that sent you this for more info?
I made a desktop to specifically cater to my icon organising ways!!!

I made different resolutions available for download too, and I aim to release a different design every month.
@Chris Long
I think it’s custom Windows 7 theme, first the angles of the dock sides are different from os x, which can be changed… but there is no finder icon in the dock, and as mentioned in another post, the divider is different. Also the menu bar looks like the windows 7 style bar. OR… it could be linux.
Am I doing it right?

who made 6th wallpaper with girl and hot rod ?
@Chris Long and whoever asked about that
That desktop is mine.
It’s actually Windows Vista Home Premium.
I’ll tell you more about the things you see on screen.
The top bar, that I use to replace the traditional windows taskbar, it’s an applet for Yahoo!Widget (formerly known as Konfabulator)called “Informer”.
http://widgets.yahoo.com/widgets/informer
It sets up an empty bar where you can add a lot of custom plugins, from net status to battery meter to gmail checker and so on.
The nice folder view is actually a part of Informer
The OSX like dock is RKLauncher

Hope that helps :)

What are the widgets in the last screenshot? They look really nice..
Does anyone know what the black ‘DT’ icon is in the 10th, 11th and 12th pictures? What software is this?

So, do we know what’s with the third? What is it up there?
i like my clean and simple with my logo. http://i40.tinypic.com/2d99w7k.jpg
At the moment, my background is a bunch of icons i desperately need to remove… I can’t oven open some of them without deactivating the vista sidebar, because they’re under it too.
I need to clean up :|
How to have something like that Twitter app on the first screengrab?

I’m just wondering where you guys get those awesome wallpapers from, for example the one from the threadstarter. Could anyone help me? Thx in advance!
@Chris Long
Sorry for the late answer, I wrote a comment but I think it got deleted because of the links in it.
Well, the 3rd desktop is mine, and it’s nothing more than Windows Vista Home Premium, a little spiced up.
The bar on the top is “Informer”, a Yahoo!Widget (formerly known as Konfabulator) plugin, that lets you put a crapload on informations, links, folders in a really tiny bar.
Below there’s RocketDock, a OSX dock clone, really customizable and if possible, superior to the OSX one (I know I’ll get flamed for this…I use both OSX and Win, and RD is a lot more customizable)
Hope that helps

If you read above it said to be Informer, which is a Yahoo Widget enginer item. It’s quite handy I’ve used it off an on for a while now. Very neat tool indeed.

@Ian, I can’t speak for anyone else, but the source image for mine (lucky number 13) comes from the US Coast Guards Information Gallery at http://cgvi.uscg.mil. I have a bunch from there that I have made some simple modification to. I’m nuts about boats and I volunteer with the Coast Guard Auxiliary so their photos make good choices for desktops for me.
I’d guess a lot of the others are custom work too.
Here is my DESKTOP.

how come all those that use xp are not using visual styles to give xp a MUCH needed facelift? there’s a TON of awesome visual styles out there, and i suggest using styler toolbar to apply them, not to mention the fact that styler toolbar can apply skins to the boring as hell xp toolbar. i’m running styler toolbar on a dell latitude c500 laptop that only has 256 mb of ram, not to mention firefox 3, photoshop cs2, illustrator cs2, indesign cs, and a bunch of other apps. granted, i don’t run them all at the same time, but the truth still remains that i can run them. by the way, styler toolbar is a FREE program. some awesome visual styles I HIGHLY recommend are circo2, area04, a1gaia, decadence, element2, foton, gaia, glitch, knurra, marian, marshall, mcv, nanoDT, nooto, noyau, nu, otium, rogueSi, serenity, simpleplan, tener, united1, and united 2. if you want to make your taskbar look like mac osx, then i suggest using niqu, which comes in an aqua variant, as well as a metal variant, and if you want a white osx look, then use milqu. combine any of these visual styles with objectdock, an awesome wallpaper, and some custom icons, and you’ve got an awesome desktop screenshot.

Now this is quite a motley collection. I hate to admit it, some of the desktops are rather ugly. However, if their owners find them attractive and conducive to productivity, I guess one shouldn’t complain. Some of these, however, are really good and come across as a work of art.
Awesome HDRi of Financial district in NYC in #2, but it seems a bit low res..
I love the first one. The photo reminds me of when I lived up North and it’s really beautiful. I like to leave my desktop clean so it’s easier to see things I have added. I have experimented with desktop images but again, too much clutter.
