In this, Part 3 of my Fontlab Studio video series, I will be showing you exactly how to make ligatures. Ligatures are a great way to automatically combine one or more characters into a single glyph, making your font more versatile and feature rich. Ligatures are important because of the way certain letters fit together, and I want to show you how to make your own. Fontlab Studio is a very robust program, and the steps involved in getting ligatures to work, aren’t immediately apparent, so I’m going to share what I’ve learned so far…

Photoshop 101: Replace Color [video]

This week I have a very simple, but useful Photoshop tip. Replace color is found in the “Image > Adjustments” menu. Obviously, this won’t work on every image, but for simple color replacements, it comes in handy. Thanks to Shutterstock for providing the image for this mini tutorial. Enjoy the video :)

Photoshop: Force Carbon Copy Dimensions and DPI Upon New Document (Video)

This one was hard to title, but it’s just a quick workflow tip to save you time. Instead of having to type in demensions and DPI every time you create a new document, you can use a series of keyboard shortcuts to force Photoshop to make a carbon copy of the current document settings. If you’re like me, you always want to learn more. Many of you have probably heard of Lynda.com, a great site with thousands of video tutorials on a variety of subjects, but you have to pay for the good stuff. Adobe has recently launched a very slick video site called Adobe TV where you can learn from the pros by watching videos and following along. It’s not quite as structured and comprehensive as Lynda, but it’s free. If you’re between projects, or just need some time to waste, you might just find a diamond in the rough somewhere in the videos.
