Great tip when your text is layered, thanks! I was just working on a logo that took far longer than it should have for this very reason.
EC – When you are working with a jpg the text isn’t going to be on a separate layer. The various contents have been “flattened” into one image. Depending on your file and what you need to change there is a process that can work sometimes, but in certain applications it can be painstaking. If anyone would like to know more I will try to help.

this didn’t help because it didn’t show how to get a ‘text layer’ out of a jpg that i just opened. i’m sure this information is helpful for those more advanced than i am. Thanks for sharing.

I’m very grateful for the tip, as I’m only a twice a year user and I find that PS randomly either makes a new layer or allows me to edit the text that I want – thank you for the control!

One related problem is editing text that has an effect – as this doesn’t have a T icon, instead has an image icon – is there a surefire way to edit this text – as I’ve been trying to for 10 minutes and it just keeps making a new layer every time!!!

Or you can hit “T” to select the text tool and click on the text.
