Photoshop 101: Easy Access to Preferences

There are tons of undocumented Photoshop shortcuts out there, lots of which can make our lives a lot easier if we only take advantage of them. I want to show you one that I use often. I would only assume that as designers, we would typically have our rulers turned on most of the time. (I’ve tested this as far back as CS1) To access your Photoshop preferences quickly, just double-click on a ruler! That’s it!

The preference pane will open in the “Units & Rulers” section, which makes sense:

For whatever reason, this does not work in Illustrator. Man, a little consistency would be nice . . .

  1. I am not sure of the other versions of CS but you can Right Mouse Click on Illustrators (CS3) ruler to set it’s measurement value.

  2. what about ctrl+k ? i find it quicker when you dont have to reach for the mouse…

  3. Isn’t the hot keys list in the book? Assuming someone bought the program :X

  4. You are freeking kidding me! Sheesh. Thanks for the help! I’ve been using CTRL+K… with “K” being an awkward key for me to use since I’m right-handed (and the right hand is on the mouse…).

yea, like the double click to open! That drives me crazy switching back and fourth.

  6. Thats cool to know, you can also do the same exact thing with the guides; if you rollover to a guide and double click it you will get the respective pane in the Preferences window.

  7. I wish the Right-click on the Title bar of a project window would give the contextual menu for image size etc. (like on the PC) would work on the MAC version of Photoshop.:-(

  8. thanks
