Hidden “Reset” Button in Photoshop Adjustment Palettes

I have a time saver for you folks. I have a keyboard shortcut I’d like to share it with you. I could have done this with screenshots, but I’m playing around with video these days, so here it is, my first video tutorial. I hope is saves you some time :)

    Nice work.
Also just to add, this keyboard shortcut applies in the general workspace of photoshop as well. It allows you to step backwards in history. Instead of only being able to undo one change. Ctrl+Alt+Z will keep going back (like the normal undo Ctrl+Z in Illustrator or other apps).
    -For what its worth.

  2. On a Leopard iMac with PS CS3 I only needed to hold down Option to get the Reset button.

  3. @Cliff,

Yeah, you’re right. I had just always had command down before I ever hit option, because of exactly what terriblecow said above.

Windows users, can you confirm that it’s only Alt that you need to press?

  4. Uh, It’s not hidden at all. Both Lynda, Total Training, and others covered this during the basic overview of the interface. In fact, every such dialog box has the reset option. This is also documented at least 15 times.

  5. I’ve known about this for a long time. I had assumed others had too. PC you only have to hold down Alt.

  6. Whoa.. first Bittbox was anonymous, then came a name, shortly after came the twitter and an about page, and now Bittbox even talks!

    Shweet!

ohyea, as for the shortcut: I’ve heard it before, but I forgot.. so thanks for reminding me :)

  7. This has been around for a long time (at least since CS2, but probably longer), but it’s great to share anyway for any new PS users!

  8. on another note, the video looked and sounded good. nice work, I look forward to more videos :)

  9. I learned something… ;)

  10. hahahaha ha

    c’mon is this a joke?
    after all this time?

  11. I’ve always known about it. Learned it from tutorials found on internet. Only press ALT.
    (PC, PSCS2)
    TFS!

  12. i never know….

  13. Nice video! Looking forward to more.

  14. Good article.Thanks for the write-up.

  15. I am a PC user. (shock, horror)

PS CS3 – yes the button is just alt.

  16. Jim: Since CS2?! This has worked since Photoshop 4, possibly even earlier but that was before my time.

  17. Good job with the video man. This same reset technique is also available in lots of the other photoshop panels (curves, levels etc.). Good for people new to photoshop to know though :)

  19. All of the super-cool readers out there should pipe down. This is a great tip; if you already knew about it then bully for you I suppose. For someone like me who is self-taught, this is the type of thing that gets overlooked while spending time on more advanced features. Hasn’t BittBox earned some respect by now?

  20. Worst tip ever. This site should be shut down. :-)

  21. @estnyboer I agree.I’ve been using Photoshop for years, and never once have I come across anything that points out this super-useful tip. If you already knew about this, great job. Some people didn’t, and this post is obviously for those people.

    Thanks bittbox!

  22. I think it was a great tip! I’ve always wanted to know how to do this, but I could never figure out how.

    @estnyboer: Yes, I agree.

  23. I’ve been using photoshop for 4-5 years and this is new to me. Thanks!

  24. I’m diggin’ the video style tip. I can tell you now that it’s a better way to catch one’s attention (and keep it too).
    Keep on keeping on! :)

  25. Great tip! I’ve been using Photoshop for years and never encountered this.

Just a suggestion for next time you do a video tip:
You may want to try recording your voice first, then make the video relative to what you’re saying, or the other way around: video first then voice. That way you can avoid all the pauses and vocal fillers (”ummm”) and make a really smooth professional looking tip video.

Thanks for all the great stuff you put out!

  26. so useful!!

  27. don’t panic.only math

  28. Thanks!

  29. thanks man! for this tips..

    Nice tip, thanks!

  31. Great tip! I’ve needed it more times than I can remember.

  32. I’m still fairly new to graphic/image manipulation and photoshop, so I don’t know all of the little shortcuts yet. Thank you for posting this one. You’ve also shown me that I should really experiment more with the keyboard and not just rely on the mouse.

  33. Not really new for me..I learned this one too from video tutorials :) But for those who don’t know – really handful little button :)

  34. I have a time saver for you folks. I have a keyboard shortcut I’d like to share it with you. I could have done this with screenshots, but I’m playing around with video these days, so here it is, my first video tutorial. I hope is saves you some time

  35. Jay, great to see you are getting into video tutorials! Especially useful for when still pictures don’t do the trick. *claps* I’m glad you’re exploring this. Let me know if I can help any, I’m a veteran screencaster: http://mashable.com/2008/10/22/how-to-master-screencasts/ :)

  36. ……..it’s not about whether you already knew this short-cut or for how long you’ve known it.
It’s a pretty useful tip, and even though you might have known it, someone will not. Which is reason enough to show it.

  37. Regardless of it being new to everyone in the world, it’s a great tip. Thanks for the post.

  38. Great shortcut. I personally had no clue this was available.

  39. Bitt – What application are you using to record the videos?

  40. Already knew it, but its nice for others to know it too. Plenty of small things that can be helpful are overlooked..

  41. I’m not so hot about the video thing–I can’t watch video at work, so without a text or image-based description of your tips, bittbox has suddenly become useless to me. Bummer–I love this site.

  42. thanks for the tip! I didn’t know it before

  43. KOOL THANKS! =)

  44. This is one of my favorite Photoshop tips. It’s been around since version 3, so you can use it in any version you happen to have.

  45. Although tips like this are a good reminder do keep in mind the best delivery method for “quick” tips. A video tutorial that lasts 1:14 is not very “quick.” Especially when all that was needed was:: “When you make an adjustment in a Photoshop pallet you can always undue the adjustment with ‘UNDO.’ If you really mess things up and want to reset all the pallet options to their default simply hold down the ALT key and click on the RESET button (which used to be the CANCEL) button”

Seriously. Your tutorial was nicely done, but just not right for the content being delivered.

  46. Thanks alot that will help me alotttttt…
    thanks again man..

  47. interesting,thank u so much! :)
