Jeez, fucking imature fanboys. There are both good sides about mac and vista. Got the best of them both. Got NO problems what so ever in games when using Vista, witch is one of the main reasons to use microsoft, to play games. Witch SUCK in OSX. Using my mac to photoshop with, that said, got heck of alot more problems using PS in mac than windows, tools getting inviseble when using spaces etc. Only small anoying errors, but realy I dont have that problem in Vista. Never had any viruses on my windows asvell, or at least not that I know of.

You gotta love the PC fanboys complaining about Mac fanboys, that is called hypocrisy in my book, i have used Macs since before computers had hard disks, and Windows since it actually worked which was the infamous windows 2, and i can remember all the pc guys saying hey its just like a Mac. Ecept of course it never was, and never will be, Mac is more expensive because its OS is one step ahead, always, (now with added UNIX bonus) and and hey the machines look cooler, and always have its akin to comparing an Aston Martin to a Toyota, if you drive a Toyota you are going to defend your purchase, but deep inside you know you want an Aston :) its just too expensive innit, and for the guy claiming that Unix is better than OSX simply cos its free, seriously when was the last time anyone actually bought an operating system. I still use both, simply because i have to give tech support for pcs, but if youve worked with both, you CANNOT say that they are the same, unless you have absolutely no taste, then again not many people actually do. Smile and be happy folks.

That’s funny. Actually it’s the opposite. Usually techies are die-hard PC people. Mac has always been sold as the easier-to-use system… and I’d agree. Don’t take my word for it… If you have an Apple Store near you I’d recommend taking a trip over there and just play around with one (or a Best Buy but the sales people aren’t as helpful). Ask one of the sales dudes to show you the basics if you’re intimidated

If you’re not completely happy with your Windows box, believe me, it’s not you.

Joe, is it true that Mac are only for highly technical people? In our office only 2 out of 10 own a Mac because of this notion. I, for example, is one of the remaining 8 because I admit I’m not that techie.

Gifts – You get what you pay for. Macs are only overpriced if you believe they are only as good as a Gateway or a Dell PC. There are plenty of affordable Mac options. Buy a mini for $500 or less and use your old PC monitor. Personally, I don’t mind spending the extra buck for a machine and OS that are designed well and actually usable.

Truth be told, VISTA is a disappointment probably even for MS fans! There’s only one thing that’s missing from your post : Linux. Now, there’s another OS war altogether, isn’t there? The Linux users also insist that they’ve got the best thing going there and quite frankly, I agree with them. Why? Well, because it’s free, that’s why. But, I’ve recently upgraded from VISTA to Ubuntu Linux Gutsy Gibbon and I mean it when I say ‘upgrade.’ I think the next upgrade is OSX, but since I don’t have the cash to buy an Apple machine (which, you must admit, is overpriced) I am happy with my HP Laptop and Ubuntu loaded on there. Basically, I get the best of both worlds.

Hello All,

I have used for years a pc with windows and before always thought that it is a stupid war between macs and pc. Currently i am an iMac and osx leopard user for 4 months, and honestly I am not going even infest my mac installing windows on bootcamp…

Osx leopard is absolutely amazing. If somebody thinks about serious work, it is the good way go for mac…

i totally agree with joenut.

as a designer myself (web and print). macs have always been reliable in terms of performance and… well interface i guess.

i have a macbook pro and an imac 24″. and i really couldn’t ask for more. compare a cluttered up windoze pc and an almost wireless imac, which one would you rather work with?

peace of mind brothers.

also, i’d rather have one central area where i can have my mac fixed rather than have 10 different repairmen who just reformats “my windows pc” over and over again, if that doesnt work, change the parts? upgrade? well, you really dont need to upgrade much hardware with macs. i have a friend who still uses an ibook, and leopard works great on it.

and yes windoze is a rip-off of the original mac interface. youtube it if you want, watch the the release of leopard or tiger, see them compare the “innovations” made by windows. i also recommend “pirates of silicone valley”.

and steve jobs is way cooler than bill gates.

i don’t even understand why they have bootcamp. hmm… maybe its a tool for people who have converted to macs and are having a hard time familiarizing themselves with mac’s interface.

i don’t even understand why some guys here have to sound like they hate macs. i mean, big deal…. so you don’t have a mac, or have never used a mac… then stick with your windoze… nobody is forcing anyone to use a mac… but if i personally know you… haha.. will definitely force you to use a mac.

seriously steve jobs is way way way cooler than bill gates, that’s why i probably love mac coz you’re cool when you have a mac and anything mac related. =p

Muriel, I would agree that you get what you pay for. And I’m certainly not saying that a $2000 Apple PC is superior to a $2000 Gateway or vice versa…

The topic of this article as I understand it is MacOS vs. the latest and greatest version of Windows. These are operating systems not complete PC’s. And last I checked MacOS Leopard is actually $30 LESS EXPENSIVE than Windows Vista. And believe me when I tell you Windows is a crappy knock off of Mac and always has been.

I can make that claim because I’m a web designer and have worked on both since 1996. The only reason I’m even wasting my time making posts here is because I’m pretty shocked that anyone would come out in defense of Windows, let alone claim it to be on par with MacOS. It’s just silly. There’s really nothing I can think of that I’d want to take from Windows and add to my Mac. Any suggestions?

If I was a gaming freak maybe I’d miss out on a few video game titles… but that’s not because the operating system is lacking anything… game developers cater to who ever has the most marketshare and that’s perfectly fine. Windows has the marketshare it does because of some poor business decisions on Apple’s part in the 1980’s and because PC’s are cheaper as you said. But even that’s changing.

Crashes? Forget it. Seriously, the only time I have to do a hard restart is when I’m booted up in Windows. Mac OS 9 crashed constantly… But crashes on OSX are too few and far between to even remember.

Unfortunately for me, until everyone finally does make the switch to Mac, I’ll have to continue to use Windows. But hey, at least my Mac lets me run both OS’s so I don’t have to drop a dime for that cheap Dell station and all those spare parts Phil says I’d need ;-)

JoeNut, as said earlier, I’ve worked on both. Not as long as you, but I do work on what’s current for both PCs and Macs.

If someone worked on a Mac before, as well as PCs, they would say what I did – they’re the same. They can crash the same, they can work the same. They both have their share of great things going for them. And, a lot of it depends on the user.

If anyone noticed though, if you spent the same amount of money on a PC as someone does on a Mac, you would get the same quality of equipment. But, people usually go out and buy a $500 Dell and compare it to the $2000 Mac.

Frankly, you should consider yourself lucky that for 12 years, you’ve never had to replace a part. That’s amazingly great for anyone using electronic equipment. Hopefully, you’re not just keeping up with what’s current and purchasing the new equipment before your old equipment goes bad though – because if everyone on a PC did that, they would have your story too.

There are too many variables to state that Macs are better than PCs or vice-versa. I think it’s fair to say that someone would have to currently work on both on a constant basis and give a damn good analysis on why one is better than the other.

Lot of Mac haters here. They’ve obviously never worked on one before or the choice would be clear. I’ve owned Mac desktops and laptops for 12 or so years and I’ve never had to replace a part Phil. But it sounds like your PC repairman gets quite the business from you. Congrats to him.

And Graham, Mac OS didn’t copy UNIX. It’s built on UNIX. Big difference. Mac is a graphical OS. But if you want to get into who copies who, Windows has been one giant Mac rip-off since Apple introduced the first consumer GUI in 84. Probably why Windows is constantly having to “patch” things up. I’m not trying to kiss Apple’s ass, but let’s get real :-)

they’re both awesome. i find vista to be lest cluttered than os x gets. but its always been that way. i find some apps crash in both… which is disappointing considering how old os x 10.4 is…. all hail microsoft

Hey GRAHAM…When did Microsoft make a computer all they do is make software and put it in other companies boxes (.ie dell, hp, etc) they don’t make the hardware.

So for once stop being an Apple hater and learn how to type correctly on that microsoft keyboard you love so much. (Oh wait, Microsoft didn’t make the keyboard either did they?) :)

Firstly let me say hello, since this is my first visit to Bittbox, and i am very impressed.
Secondly as stated previously by another user they both have upside and down sides. Since this is a deisgn website, and presumably well all probably use Adobes suite of software it is neither here nor there whether we use mac or pc, since it is essentially the same during your time at the mac/pc.
as for GUI maybe mac is better…..or is it? is it just for people that like things to look nice? Macs are no more powerful either, especially since they started using intel processors. If macs are more powerful why doesnt everyone use them?

the whole mac being better for design rubbish is a legacy picked up from earlier in the CAD era. It makes no difference whether you use mac or pc to design with in my view.

if you want to buy a mac then go for it, just dont come running to me when a hardware component fails, go and ring your nearest mac centre and lose valuble work time, rather than calling your tech and getting him to replace the part in a matter of hours/minutes.

Christan,, the iPhone is a Motorola Phone, with a mac input section,,,, not developed totaly by mac,,, also did mac inovate OSX,, or copy Unix……. hum…… microsoft ignorent,,,, well not all pc users us M$,,, and which type of computers prides itself on the fact its user base cant even turn on a computer,,,,,

In regards to this post – I use both Macs and PCs. Frankly, neither one is greater than the other because they both have downsides and I could list those off. I currently use Vista and it’s fine, especially when you get rid of those notices. I use Macs and they’re fine too, especially when you have a mouse that has a right button.

Anyway, Vista is working out great for me so this post isn’t as close to reality as it seems.
