The Straw that Broke the Camel’s Back: New Host!
If you’ve had trouble accessing BittBox in the past few days, I apologize. I’ve been with GoDaddy for over 5 years, and it’s had it’s ups and downs, but I just couldn’t take it anymore, so I got pissed and switched to (mt) Media Temple over-night. Here’s my story:
A few days ago I submitted a trouble ticket when some software on my GoDaddy server locked up, and a few hours later, they replied stating that they had resolved the issue, and charged me $75. Great……wait, what? My site doesn’t work anymore!
I hadn’t changed a single setting on my server and the BittBox homepage wouldn’t load. So I called GoDaddy again, and another 6 hours go by, and they tell me that it’s my .htaccess file that’s causing the problem. So, in a nutshell, not only was my site down, but I PAID GoDaddy $75 to f*ck it up. Awesome, right?
Anyway, that’s just one of many stories. I was sooo pissed, I didn’t even flinch. I immediately called MediaTemple and bought a new hosting account, and started uploading. After I was about 50% done uploading, I switched the DNS and this morning I canceled my GoDaddy account. I’m looking forward to this fresh start, and again, I apologize to those of you who were inconvenienced by GoDaddy’s incompetence.

I know exactly what you mean. I have the same issues with Lunarpages, and Hostrocket, to the point where one of them (their name rhymes with flu-narpages) shut down 12 sites because one of the sites associated with my account got behind, mind you it was only one of them, because of an unchanged e-mail oversight. Finally i tried the big Grid at Media Temple and wowsers this things a juggernaut. If you have a crummy set-up save the hassles and move on over its great.
MT is the Diggity Whoop.
I (L) (mt)! :)
Sorry you had so many troubles, but ok glad to see you back up and running! I use godaddy and I hope I don’t run into problems. I sent you a message the other day. I wonder if you recieved it with all the problems you were having at the time?
Anyway, welcome back!
welcome back. you had me in a panic there…..
glad to see everything is functioning again :) My host has been really screwy as well, I can’t seem to find a really affordable host for the unlimited bandwidth :( But thanks for the heads up I’ll avoid GoDaddy like a plague. I sent you a message as well I think it was yesterday, I hope you got it :) Glad to see you back!
Once I lost a domain name with Go Daddy, they are crap, period.
I’M SO GLAD YOU’RE ALIVE!
Had me worried for a bit there. I love your site! Sorry to hear that about Go Daddy. Hope Media Temple treats you better. I am oddly in completely opposite situation. I was with Media Temple and got frustrated by their service/system so I moved over to Go Daddy. I guess every company has chance to screw up depends on which employee customer end up with. Maybe you can have a off-site such as twitter or facebook where you can put status update in case your site goes down again so we don’t run around like chickens with their head cut off. :) Welcome back!
Well, as long as you’re not with network solutions.

:D
Welcome back!
Welcome to the (mt) family, you’ll love it :)
I’m going to bite my tongue here.
I hope you enjoy cashing in on that well placed referral link.
Lol … sweet. You can’t expect a domain seller to have the same standards as a dedicated hoster. (mt) is really great. What type of account did you get from mt. dedicated virtual or grid ?
Good luck with them new home!
It’s good to have you back!
Can’t trust a company owned by a pervert who spends more time objectifying women than responding to customer concerns.
I’ve been with media temple for quite awhile, and they’re fantastic. good to have you back!
Have fun with (mt). I switched to them last Summer and since then there has been no looking back.
We don’t want your jankity site on our servers anyway
My mom and I have had serious issues with our server as well, so you’re definitely not alone. I’m glad you got everything back up though.
Go daddy go! :)
Keep us informed on how things go with MT. I am considering switching from GoDaddy as well. I have notice very slow speeds with my Wordpress site. I am currently looking into why it is so slow.
I only use Go Daddy for cheap domains. I would never host with them *shudder*. I use Host Gator and they are pretty good.

I hear people bitch about GoDaddy all the time. So I will never use them. I been w/Crystaltech since 2003. Never had a problem.

I told them to “Go! Daddy!” sometime ago because our Finance Dept was 1 day (ONE DAY) late on the payment. They shut down the website and when we went to manage it later, it was like it never existed. Everything was gone, kaput, vaporized from the face of the earth. I used to recommend them highly but now never will.
I panicked when I saw the Apache Testing Page. For a moment I thought something had happened to one of my favourite sites.
So, Welcome Back!
I use 1&1, and my sites sometimes go down for days at a time. Once my contract expires (I’m getting dirt-cheap hosting now from them :-D ), man, I’m outta there.
There’s a lot of web hosts, but not a lot of good ones. At work we use (mt), and for small personal projects I’ve been using Dreamhost. The control panel on Dreamhost is well thought out and has a ton of features compared to (mt), and for less money. Dreamhost does tend to have non-stop issues, but (mt) hasn’t been perfect either.
I had similar problems with GoDaddy (problems loading a WordPress install). Switched to BlueHost and like it better so far.
Lesson learned: When your webhost starts running Superbowl ads, they’re big enough that they don’t give a sh*t about you.
You should send this letter to http://consumerist.com/
it is a great place to vent…
Thank you so much, I love your site. I recentley had problems with my hosting company and have been looking for a solid recommendation. Just signed up with mt today! Crossing my fingers.
Hmm.. my sympathies. I have just been through EXACTLY the same situation, but with streamline.net. A bizarre charge, denial of any problems at their end. My site gets a lot of traffic because there are so many free downloads, and unfortunately not everyone has been patient while I switched hosts. Talk about angry emails! It amazes me that even when you give things away for free (in my case its photoshop brushes) people still find the energy to be cross if its taken away for a while!
Oh well.. I am now with the excellent daily.co.uk. My goodness, its so fast, so smooth, and the support is so personal! A nice man called Alan helps me…!
Glad youre all back up and running anyway.. keep up the excellent work
Glad you are back up and from everything I have heard you chose a great host. I am using Dreamhost for now because I am still very small, but once my site gets going, you bet I will be switching over to (mt). I have heard of too many problems with Dreamhost when sites get big.
Yay! I love MT too. I’ve been with them for four years now and love their support and services.
I think you may have convinced my to switch to MT. I’ve been thinking about it lately because go daddy is so incredible slow. They are good for putting up a cheap sand box website just to play around with.
LOVE (mt). Good choice.
Bad for GoDaddy… I wont use their hosting services after such failure. I’ll stay with my own server where I can do what I want!
GoDaddy Sucks. I’ve used Lunar Pages for a long time and they fixed stuff fast and don’t usually charge me for every little thing. I’ve bought a few sites with 1and1.com because they are cheaper but their customer services is not as good.
What is it with designers using MT? For years I have never understood that, alot of them prominently display “Powered by MT” even without an affiliate id.
Its like design sites are synonymous with MT.
Yeah, hosts are really hit or miss. I have a client that has been using a company called 1host for several years. It’s a nightmare doing development for him because I always (and this has been over these several years) have FTP issues with them. Using Dreamweaver or FireFTP I get connection losses all the time. Tracert shows no packet losses either and their tech support has no clue. *sigh*
Hmmm i’m gonna hop back on and chime in with the host talk. I’ve been using hostrocket for several years now…. last year was a REALLY bad year but it seems to be picking up again now. I’m seriously considering getting a new host when my contact expires depending on how they do in the next year. It sucks because they were really awesome when i had first started using them for my clients pages like…. 3 or 4 years ago? And recently there was some sort of disaster with their phone services or something like that which ended up causing their host services to go downhill a bit. It seems they’ve recovered since my response tickets are now being answered within 3 hours as opposed to 24. They have good customer service. I just wish my downtime wasn’t so rough with them.
HAHA, good one Auron.

I know what you mean. I was with GoDaddy.com for about a week. I had a simple web app on there and found that I had to manually enter all my data into the database that I had accumulated over time. I couldn’t execute my own statements through their console, nor remotely connect to my instance. After many site crashes similar to yours, I pulled up roots and decided to be a little brave and host it myself out of my apartment. What’s really goofy is that despite all the visitors I get, my uptime and availability is much, much greater than what they offered.
I concur, GoDaddy sucks.
Grats on the switch. Been with (mt) for a while now. They have the best customer service around.
Yep, I know the feeling. I was using IX Web Hosting’s professional package. Man was that a nightmare. Now we use (MT) exclusively and it’s mandatory for any client site we design (if they don’t host their own stuff) that it’s hosted there. I’ve had 0 issues since then. And if there was a problem, then friendly and competent team would get it resolved in a jiffy.
Good move Bitt.
I host with GoDaddy and 1and1 and both have their setbacks, but at least 1and1 doesn’t suck you dry. Your new host looks really legit and I think they may have a new customer.
Keep rocking Bitt.
This is odd because I’m contemplating leaving Media Temple behind for the exact same reasons. At the time of this writing, my site along with several of my clients sites are all down for some reason.
My advice? Stay off the Grid Server.
this stuff is so nice! i could really use this on my demo page…it blows what i have out of the water. how about a single row of drop points? that could work too…
We are just starting our media company, and this is GREAT info. So long Go Daddy, hello MT!!!
Keep up the good work!

Don’t be surprised when you start getting bombarded with Spam from MT. I was with MT when they started and got serious Spam problems from their servers. So Watch Out! Canceled all my accounts and never looked back. (Petty Hosting Solution) MT Just a label.
You may want to check this guys out HostMySite.com 24 hours pure support absolutely no wait time, incredible Spam filter Add on (Postini) Ask for it… and so much more options. Never had a single problem in 6 years.

What I don’t understand if you have critical website or need good performance why are you looking for a cheap web hosting client? Get a dedicated server. You can find Managed dedicated servers from reputable companies like Server Intellect and host your sites and development sites. Once your site grows to large you will have to move to a different host or plan. I mean how many horror stories have you heard from larger sites that were shut down because they were hogging all the resources on one server.
nice picture in the post :p
