Stubborn? Yes indeed!
I tried over and over and finally found out, that the document color mode has to be RGB and the black-white gradient in RGB as well – my gradient was in grayscale. NOW it works :-)

Hi – thank you for a good tutorial. But… I had the same problem as Kath – the bottom of the design is still visible on the white background and I spent a long time trying to fix it – without luck. Had to send the layout as a jpeg to a client, so I cheated in Photoshop by using the eraser. Please let me know how to fix the problem in Illustrator, as I am very frustrated :-)

What about on a white background? This works great on black but when i apply the same steps to a white background the image is still visible. Please shed some light, I’ve spent too much time trying to figure this one out. cheers
