Illustrator 101: Reset Your Rulers (Video)
Hey everyone, before you blow up the comments about how you already knew this, let me say one thing. Not everyone is an avid user and these little tips are meant to help rid people that are learning Illustrator of some daily frustration with simple answers to simple problems. Today’s question was sent in by Morgan, and it has to do with rulers. Have a watch.

I believe you can also simply double-click the corner of the rulers as well to reset them to the origin. It’s a bit faster.
great tip. i’m just learning illustrator and i haven’t had time to get into little things like this. i think the video stuff you’re doing is great.
sidenote: what mic do you use to record?
I cab’t beleive how critcal some people can be when getting free tutorals sometimes! It’s the little things that can drive you mad, especially when a new program seems overwhelming, but these things can even sometimes be new to seasoned users., and it can be hard to find help on these things. Keep up the great work.
This is exactly how I learned the basics of Photoshop and Illustrator. The little things make a program so mych better..
Thanks Jay!

That was awesome. Thank you. Something I always knew had to have a simple solution, but was too lazy to go looking for it.
I never realized you could simply double click to reset them. Thanks for the tip!
Sweet as! I used to make a new document and copy and paste everything into that. Not any more. Thanks!
Thank God! That was one thing I absolutely abhorred about Illustrator!
OOooohh Jay, what a sweet voice u’ve there :D
anw nice explanations.
Damn…
Allready 3 years of constant use of Illustrator and I learn every day!
Great tip!
This spares me 30 seconds +/- 12 times a day!
Grz!
huh, knew this, just didn’t know that double click reset = nice, simple tip :)
Holy crap, that just saved me hours per year. Why don’t they teach us this stuff in college. Thank you Bitt. What university will you be teaching at in about 14 yrs? I want to send my son there!
I’ve been using Illustrator and Photoshop for years, and I did know these tips. However, there have been several others that were helpful. There are so many of these commands and shortcuts that it’s unlikely anyone will learn them all until someone else points them out.
Keep it up, Jay!!
Like the videos. Keep them coming!
Thanks so much!
I’m one of those people who sometimes posts a comment such as “seriously, you didn’t know that? That’s been there for years.” Every time I do that, which isn’t very often by the way, I kick myself. I forget that not everyone has been using Adobe Photoshop since before Adobe owned it, or Quark XPress since before the company was called Quark.
Tips like these need to be more frequent. There are tons of new users out there, and simple tips like this can make the level of frustration with those users a LOT lower when learning an app. They can also remind us old-timers about some tricks we’ve long since forgotten!
I’ve been using Illustrator every day for over 5 years and never knew that simple trick. Thanks so much!
I always drag the point from the corner as I like my 0’s at top and left. Is there anyway to make the double click default to 0’s at top left instead of bottom and left?
Thanks!
I actually think it is a great idea to do quick blog posts with quick answers like this. I think it is extremely helpful for people who didn’t know.
Wow. 9 years of using illustrator… and I’ve never known this, and it’s driven me crazy. Thank you, thank you.
Great tip! Thank-you for taking time to make vid!
I knew about dragging to reset the zero point to the upper left, like I want it to be, but didn’t know about double clicking to get the zero on the top. Why isn’t there a preference, or a script or something that will always keep the zero points top left for me! :-)
From another “years of using – didn’t know this” user, thanks for the tip.
the video is no longer available… like a lot of other video-tutorials on this site: it is anything you can do about it?
I’ve foud the video here!

Another long time(though infrequent)user here and I didn’t know that either. Brill tip. Thank you. :o)
Thanks for the tutorial, it’s always about the basics!
