Here’s a follow-up tip: If you want to get really inventive you can incorporate transparency into your brushes.

First make a shape with a gradation from white to black (where white will be transparent and black opaque) then set the blend mode to “multiply”. Make your brush and when you’re specifying the brush settings, for “Colorization Method” select “Tints”.

And yes, you can make smooth gradients if you make use of the Blend tool when constructing your brushes. Just don’t go overboard with the increments.

I am a student and still learning new things about Illustrator everyday. At the beginning of my course I found the program confusing and bewildering. Your easy to follow tutorials are making me wonder how I managed without it. Keep up the good work.
