i think you can skip step 8 by making sure the “ignore white” box is checked in the Live Trace options palette when you are fine tuning your trace.

Easiest way to make a font: http://www.fontcapture.com/. You can just draw your font on the provided pdf they give, or edit your font in illustrator and place on their sheet and upload. Check it out.

i think you can skip step 8 by making sure the “ignore white” box is checked in the Live Trace options palette when you are fine tuning your trace. It also helps because sometimes when you delete the white shapes manually

fontforge is an open source program written in C – this is neither shareware nor windows only. You can build it for any platform, but since it uses X11 windowing you would see it best in Linux. OS X works fine using macports (the “easy” way to do such things), and they claim to have a version you can build on windows in Visual Studio.
It only takes a minute to google these things. :s
